Tigers clinch basketball victories

The Luverne Tiger varsity basketball teams had a busy week taking on Calhoun Jan. 22, Central High School in Hayneville Jan. 26, and Goshen Jan. 27.

The Luverne varsity girls took home big wins throughout the entire week. The Lady Tigers defeated Calhoun 60-34. Nikayla Melton and Zyan Peterson were the leading scorers both bringing in 14 points for their team. Followed by Sarah Crum with 13 points. 

Zyan Peterson, a senior on the varsity girls’ team, reflected on her feelings of pride in the team’s performance and expressed optimism going forward in the season. 

“As we are coming to the end of the regular season, I am proud of my team and I for how we have played throughout the season,” Peterson said. “I feel we have amazing chemistry as a team and we are all working together to achieve our goals.” 

The Lady Tigers defeated Central 68-16 Jan. 26. The leading scorer was Peterson with 30 points, followed by Sarah Crum with 13 points. The Lady Tigers had another huge win Jan. 27 against Goshen with a score of 53-24, making the varsity girls 5-0 in the area. Peterson was the leading scorer bringing in 20 points, followed by Britini Barber with nine points. The Lady Tigers currently sit at 19-5 in the regular season. 

Preceding the Luverne vs. Goshen game Jan. 27, the Tigers recognized their senior players, Zyan Peterson, Jordan Johnson, Tiger Harris, Dee Smith, Myrez Gross, and Dante Smith. 

The boys varsity team got off on a slower start to the week, coming up short to Calhoun 64-44 Jan. 22. 

The Tigers stepped up their game on Friday and Saturday, bringing in wins in both games. On Jan. 26 the team defeated Central 53-50 and also defeated Goshen 61-37 Jan. 27.

The Luverne varsity boys and girls teams faced Pike Lib Jan. 29 and both teams won. The girls won 61-13 and the boys 55-38. The Tigers took on Georgiana Jan. 30. However, at time of publishing there was no score available.
