Police pursuit leads to crash in Brantley

Captain Mason Adcock with the Luverne Police Department has released the following information in regards to the car crash in Brantley Friday night.

On March 21, 2021 shortly after 11 pm Crenshaw 911 received a call in reference to a reckless driver on Montgomery Hwy. headed south into Luverne that had stopped at the Marathon in Rutledge. Luverne officers observed a white Ford car, matching the description, leave the Marathon and travel into Luverne. Officers followed the suspect vehicle to observe if it was driving reckless. Officer Coggins witnessed the vehicle driving erratically and attempted to stop it. The suspect fled at a high rate of speed traveling south on 331 toward the town of Brantley. As the suspect entered the town of Brantley, he ran a Crenshaw County Deputy Sheriff off the road. Once in Brantley, the suspect crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle causing it to overturn. The suspect traveled a short distance further south before abandoning the vehicle. Brantley Police Department along with Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate the suspect a very short time later.

The occupants of the overturned vehicle were treated by rescue on scene and released. The suspect was transported to Crenshaw Community Hospital for treatment and then released.

Kirby Zancheiz Gray, 35, of Elba, Ala. was arrested and charged with five counts of attempted murder, attempting to elude police, two counts possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple traffic violations. Gray is currently being held in the Crenshaw County jail under a $450,000 bond.

A police pursuit that began in Luverne ended in a two vehicle crash near Brantley High School. The pursuit began around 11:30 PM Friday night.

A white Ford 4 door ended up on Fulton Ave and uprooting a tree. Another vehicle was overturned on Hwy 331 several yards away.

Lieutenant Crowley with the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department was unwilling to release any information due to an ongoing investigation.
