Blaze claims old Chapel Hill School building
The old Chapel Hill School went up in flames yesterday morning.
Four fire departments were dispatched at 10:02 a.m. to Chapel Hill for an active fire. Chapel Hill, Rutledge, Luverne, and Honoraville fire departments were the first to respond.
“We arrived at the old school house and the building was fully engulfed,” W.A. Neal, Luverne fire chief, said. “We began to surround and drown the area around the building making sure that the fire was contained.”
Fuller’s Crossroads, Glenwood, and Brantley volunteer fire departments responded to the call for additional manpower.
The fire is believed to have started from a brush pile that was being burned nearby, Neal said.
Neal said the building had not been in use in some time and was beginning to fall in on itself. The structure was completely burned to the ground.
