Brantley Bulldogs advance to state championship

The Brantley Bulldogs are heading to the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 1A State Championship after a 78-67 victory over Hubbertville in the Final Four on Monday. Brantley will take on Robert C. Hatch Bobcats in the title game on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 5:45 p.m. at the BJCC arena.

Leading the charge for Brantley was Jayden Parks, who put up a game-high 34 points. Julius Sylvester contributed 15 points, while Jon Harper Kilcrease added 13.

Parks credited his teammates for helping him find his rhythm.

“I struggled a little bit before I found my groove,” said Jayden. “My teammates, like they have done all year, hit some big shots for me and opened things up. It is really on them, all my successes are really all on them, opening up the shots.”

Although Hubbertville managed an early lead, closing out the first quarter ahead, 15-10, Brantley responded in dominant fashion. The Bulldogs exploded for a 31-point second quarter. Fueled by an 11-0 run before halftime, Brantley seized a 41-29 lead at the break.

Hubbertville attempted to fight back, but every time they made a push, Brantley had an answer. The Bulldogs’ defense tightened when it mattered most, allowing just one field goal in the final three minutes of the third quarter and maintaining a commanding 61-46 lead.

Even a fourth-quarter run from their opponent couldn’t shake Brantley’s focus, as they confidently closed out the game to secure their spot in the championship.

“Hubbertville played a great game,” said head coach Andre Parks. “ They were one of the toughest teams we have played all season, and they are very well-coached.”

The Bulldogs’ success has been fueled by more than just talent — it has also been guided by the influence of Brantley legend Chuck Person. The Auburn basketball icon and former NBA player has been a key presence on the Brantley bench, mentoring the team and helping shape their championship mentality.

“I reach out to him every year,” said Parks. “It worked out this year that he was able to help. It’s almost like a cheat code having Chuck over there on the bench. He’s in charge of the offense and he’s brought a different mindset to the team.”

As the Bulldogs returned to Brantley Tuesday, they received a hero’s welcome, complete with an escort by Brantley Police Chief Titus Averett.

According to Parks, the team is carrying on what those past champions built, and no matter what happens, this season will be remembered. They have high hopes to cement this team’s place in history. As a historic opportunity awaits, Brantley is prepared to finish the journey.

Fans are encouraged to come together in front of the school at 1 p.m. today to give the Bulldogs a heartfelt send-off with cheers and well wishes.
