Folmar named Angler of the Year

By Haley Mitchell Godwin

Jessica Folmar, alongside her husband Jon, has been making waves in the fishing community since the duo began fishing competitively three years ago. Jessica’s performance and commitment led Crappie Masters Alabama Trail to name her the 2023 Female Angler of the Year.

Keith Cole, the 2023 director for the Alabama Crappie Masters Trail, commended Jessica for her dedication and character both on and off the water. He emphasized her presence at every tournament, no matter the conditions.

From braving tornado warnings to enduring freezing temperatures and strong winds, Jessica stood strong through the season. Even in adverse weather conditions, she pushed through the challenges, displaying an unwavering commitment to the sport. Her determination and consistency have made her a well-respected angler within the community, Cole stated.

“Jessica was at every tournament, all seven,” Cole said. “She fought the waves at Weiss Lake where you would have thought we were on an ocean instead of a lake. There were so many that were ready to call it a day by 11 a.m. because of the drenching rain, but Jessica stuck it out. She is consistent, very knowledgeable, and has a passion for fishing. Not only is Jessica an excellent angler, she is an awesome, down to earth lady that would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it.”

Jessica attributes her victory to a combination of factors including  jigs from Limits Tackle and handmade jigs crafted by Jon.

“It’s also very important to keep up with the latest fishing technology,” Folmar said. “It really plays a vital role in staying competitive.”

For Jessica, fishing alongside her spouse has been an incredible experience, one she said was filled with both amazing moments and challenges. She recognizes the blessings that come with sharing a passion with her husband, forming a formidable team on the water. The Folmars’ dedication and skill have earned them numerous accolades, including being crowned the first prize winners of the 2022 Crappie Masters Alabama Trail Championship. Their synchrony and shared enthusiasm for the sport have undoubtedly contributed to their success and solidified their bond both on and off the water.

While this year saw them finish in fourth place, Jon, expressed his pride and adoration for his wife’s accomplishments and cherishes the opportunity to fish alongside the best partner in the business.
