The Crenshaw County Children’s Policy Council met Monday, June 23 at the courthouse in Luverne. District Judge Jon Folmar delivered updates on the council’s finances, recent events and programs coming up later this summer.
Folmar detailed the council’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library account balance, which as of Monday was $3,405.48. He explained that the council received another $1,000 grant for the program.
According to Folmar, the council will host movie nights beginning on July 17 at 6 p.m. with a showing of “Mary Poppins.” The event is planned as a family night in cooperation with the Luverne Public Library, Crenshaw County Extension and the Crenshaw County Commission.
“As you know, I have done my best to keep our children occupied in the proper way,” Folmar said. “This is just another effort in doing that and bringing more things into this community that we can be proud of.”
Folmar request volunteers to chaperone the event, noting that every child attending should be supervised by a responsible adult.
“We’ll have people stationed throughout the courthouse to guide them into the courtroom,” he said. “We’ll have someone stationed at the front of the stairs, at the bottom of the stairs, so [children] won’t go all around the courthouse.”
The judge said he selected “Mary Poppins” for the first movie night to celebrate the family favorite’s 50th anniversary. He encouraged council members to invite children to dress up as chimney sweeps or other characters to enhance the fun.
“If all goes well, then I will plan another one after it,” Folmar said. On August 14, he hopes to host a senior citizens summit in partnership with the Auburn Extension Service, the local bar association and other groups.
“It will be held between 1 and 4 p.m.,” Folmar said. “The topics will cover consumer fraud because that’s the number one group that fraud activity tries to hit.”
The summit will also cover financial exploitation.
“We’ll deal with general crime prevention tips thanks to law enforcement and their participation. We’ll also deal with Social Security, Social Security supplements and nutrition.”
Folmar said other topics will include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other senior health-related topics.”
