An Editorial Opinion of The Luverne Journal

Pages of The Luverne Journal are busting at the seams, so to speak, brimming with coverage heralding all that Crenshaw County communities have to offer.

Four weeks in a row, headlines highlighted events hosted as part of the Luverne Public Library’s summer reading program, “Color Our World.” Each Friday, local children have gathered to continue STEM learning outside the classroom and under the guise of fun by meeting entertainers — a juggler and a magician — and enjoying a presentation by the McWane Science Center. Meanwhile, age-level reading and craft programs kept young readers working on their literacy skills over the summer break.

Down Main Street, Maggie’s Coffee House hosted an after-hours live concert on June 12 and offered special desserts with appetizers outside the normal menu options. Earlier that evening, Word Nerds book club met to discuss the group’s current read, “S” and other page-turners club members recently enjoyed.

For a small town where there is reportedly “nothing to do,” there seems to be quite a lot happening, thanks to the initiatives of local residents. The Luverne city council is steadily working to help with the effort, and recently passed a resolution solidifying funding for a splash pad at E.L. Turner Park.

Frankly, it’s refreshing to highlight all that’s good in our communities. Such is not the case in other counties, and we are grateful for local grass-roots efforts that keep things moving toward progress.
