Maggie’s Coffee House in downtown Luverne was home to local entertainment on Thursday, June 10, serving special desserts and appetizers along with regular menu options guests listened to a concert.

Owned by Maegan Marshall, the cafe had live music for the first time provided by Lurleen B. Wallace (LBW) Community College’s student band.

“I really think it’s important that our community has something for the kids to go to that is not only family friendly but also something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg,” Marshall said. “You can come and listen to the band for free… You don’t have to buy anything while you’re here, or we have great appetizers, so if you just wanted to come and get some nachos you can still have a great time in Luverne without having to travel out of the city or break the bank.”

To coordinate the event, Marshall contacted LBW’s Unplugged band members – an acoustic version of LBW’s rock band, Ensemble, after attending a performance of theirs at Bluebird Coffee Co. in Andalusia. During the concert at Maggie’s, Unplugged played a set list filled with blues, 80s and 90s rock, country, R&B and more.

“We’re excited to be here. I like coffee and coffee shops and I like giving the students an opportunity to play,” said Johnny Brewer, LBW director of Ensemble and Unplugged. “We treat the Ensemble and Unplugged almost like a lab in a science class; they’re learning how to gig by doing this, they’re learning how to hopefully go out one day and do this on their own and make money.”

While attendees were listening to the concert, they also had the opportunity to purchase coffees, refreshers, lunch menu items and appetizers to enjoy from Maggie’s offerings

Additionally, the cafe also offered a special dessert for the night, a crème brulee cheesecake topped with a brittle shell of caramelized sugar.

“We were super excited to have [Unplugged],” Marshall said. “It’s our first time having live music here but we’re really hoping to expand out on it for the summer, so this is our test run to see how Luverne reacts to it.”

Marshall said she hopes to have similar events like the concert Thursday night in the future, with some examples including other concerts, trivia nights, karaoke nights and more.

For more information on any future events or regular hours, follow Maggie’s Coffee House on social media. Additionally, Marshall said the cafe is working on a website which will be going live soon.
