This week in history, Crenshaw County was the home for different events like the Boy Scout Camporee and a firemen’s convention. Additionally, the county boasted achievements including the besting of a fund drive goal. Here is what happened May 16, 1962.
Crenshaw Surpasses Cancer Crusade Goal
Crenshaw County’s Cancer Crusade raised over $2,000 for their cause, surpassing its goal for the year by 53.8%.
“Contributing over $2,000, Crenshaw citizens can be proud of the fact that they were second in the state to reach their goal; their percentage exceeding the goal may be the highest in the state,” said E.L Turner Jr., the Cancer Crusade chairman.
Letters went out to donors in Crenshaw County thanking them for their individual contributions to the drive.
Special recognition was given to the Luverne Fire Department, Foster Drug, Qualls Café, The Duk Inn, The Luverne Journal and the Bus Station Café for their support.
Band Slates concert for Friday Night
The Luverne Band advertised their concert for that Friday night, mentioning the songs within the program and a list of performers.
Some of the songs include “The Fall of Jericho,” “Symphony No. 5 in E Minor,” “Excerpts from the Finale,” and more.
The band concert’s goal was to support the band and the Band Boosters Club of Luverne.
District Scouts Camp, Cook, at Luverne pool site
Over 100 boys from Crenshaw, Butler and Lowndes counties joined together at the Boy Scout Camporee at the Luverne Pool area this week in history.
During the event, scouts could take part in day activities, demonstrations and competitive stunts. The camp ran for two days, with scouts disbanding on Saturday to head back to their homes.
Firemen Host Convention
The local firemen’s group was the host to the Silver Anniversary Annual State Convention of Alabama Firemen’s Association.
During the two days of the convention, around 85 firemen from across the state arrived in Luverne at the Luverne Firemen’s Clubhouse.
Officials like State Fire Marshal J.V Kitchens and State Civil Defense Officer John C. Smith served as speakers for the convention.
Additionally, participants of the convention took part in a banquet, dance and live entertainment.
