City, county agencies cleanup graffiti ahead of commencement

The Luverne Police Department (LPD) responded to an early-morning call from Luverne High School Monday, May 19. At around 6:08 a.m., officers arrived on the scene and discovered graffiti painted in multiple areas on the front of the high school building.

The discovery was made ahead of the day which would bring commencement exercises for the school’s seniors. According to Luverne Police Captain Mason Adcock, LPD officers assisted by Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Deputies cleared the campus before faculty or students arrived.

“[The graffiti was from one end of the building to the other on the front and then in multiple other places throughout the campus,” Adcock said. “We didn’t know when the criminal mischief had occurred, and we didn’t know if there was possibly still someone on campus. We wanted it cleared before any staff or students started arriving.”

The department, along with school staff, are reviewing security camera footage and social media posts. No suspect has been identified at this point, Adcock confirmed.

The captain expressed his gratitude for the city and county agencies who assisted with the response effort.

“Special thanks to everyone that helped with the cleanup: first and foremost, school staff and parents, also Luverne Electric, Water and Street Departments, Luverne Fire Department, Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office and Jail and Luverne Police Department,” Adcock said. “So many people came without being asked and provided equipment and supplies. These men and women made sure that the campus was ready for graduation ceremonies.”
