City Council Member Kathy Smyth has announced her candidacy for mayor of Luverne. The longtime resident and community leader said a desire to continue working for the future of the hometown and people she loves inspired her to run for the office.

“As a longtime resident of Luverne, I have witnessed the incredible spirit of our community and the hard-working individuals who make this town a special place to live, work and raise our families,” Smyth said. “It is with great passion and a deep commitment to our future that I seek to bring my experience and vision to the mayor’s office.”

Spending much of her early childhood in the area and later raising her son, Rann with husband Randy in Luverne, the candidate said she has been actively engaged in community service and local initiatives aimed at uplifting the community throughout her time there. She has served as a Luverne City Council Member, representing District 3 and as a rural workforce coordinator with Southeast Alabama Works, one of seven regional workforce councils in Alabama, Smyth has helped provide resources to local businesses and workers.

“My work as a City Council member for the past nine years has equipped me with the municipal knowledge, insight and skills needed to navigate challenges, build confidence and drive purposeful plans for the future,” Smyth said. “I believe in the power of collaboration, and I am dedicated to listening to each of you — hearing your concerns, understanding your needs, and building relationships.”

Smyth outlined seven critical elements she will prioritize if elected as mayor. These include working on community engagement, infrastructure repair and advancement, economic and workforce development, public safety and wellness and sustainable growth while developing youth educational and recreational programs as well as adult recreation and entertainment.

“We must invest in educational opportunities and recreational programs that empower our youth and prepare them for success,” Smyth said. “Our parks should promote opportunities for our children to learn about respect and leadership in a variety of athletics and organized activities, as well as a safe and pleasing place to play.”

Smyth plans to host “meet the candidate” events for citizens to learn more about her platform, share ideas and get involved in her campaign.

“I invite you to join me on this journey as we envision a brighter future for Luverne,” Smyth said. “Together we can build a thriving community that reflects our shared values and aspirations. Thank you for your support, and let’s work together to make Luverne the best it can be and remain truly ‘The Friendliest City in the South.’”
