Hey Siri: You are Pet of the Week

Published 10:15 am Tuesday, April 1, 2025

This week’s Pet of the Week is Siri, an eight-year-old Beagle living with the Hughes family in Goshen.

Siri is an intelligent pup and has learned to speak on command, sit and shake for her mom and dad, James and Jamelyn Hughes. She came to live with her family after she was found with her mom and siblings abandoned on a rural Crenshaw County dirt road.

“Siri is kind and gentle,” Jamelyn Hughes said. “She has often accompanied me to therapy sessions outdoors at the park and is loved by all.”

Siri is a typical Beagle and loves to dig up everything from tree stumps to septic system field lines. However, according to Jamelyn, Siri loves her favorite snack, jelly beans, even more than she adores digging and would eat the whole bag given the opportunity.

In fact, Siri is a fan of all types of food and waits under the table at mealtime to steal food from her baby sister, three-year-old Caroline Hughes. The cherished pup has been known to take more than one treat from Caroline, and snatches anything she can get — lollipops, breakfast biscuits and even broccoli.

Siri sleeps under the Hughes’ bed each night, protecting her family and barking at “imaginary” intruders. Still a playful pup in her advancing years, Siri is working on her figure to trim down and shed the pounds she packed on snatching snacks.

Affectionately known as “veloci-pig” to her family, Siri loves all pets and people. She showers guests with kisses on every occasion.
