Doris Carr Thomas
Doris Carr Thomas, 79, a resident of Petrey, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 17, while surrounded by her family. Funeral services for Doris were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 20, at Joquin Baptist Church with Rev. Dunford Cole and Rev. Ken Jackson officiating. She was then laid to rest beside the love of her life, her husband Donald, in the church cemetery there with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Doris graduated from Massey Draughon Business School in Montgomery, and her career in local government in Crenshaw County would begin in 1976. She served 20 years in the Probate Office before going on to work as the assistant administrator for six years and then she was promoted to County Administrator for the last five years before her retirement. She proudly served as the treasurer for Joquin Baptist Church for over 20 years, and loved every minute she spent with her church family there. She truly loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with all of her heart and was an example to so many in her dedication to spending time immersed in God’s Word, her Bible, every day for as long as she was able.
Above all, Doris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister throughout her life. There was never a doubt that she loved them with every single ounce of her heart, and they all thrived as they basked in that love. She adored her three children, but there is just nothing better than those grandchildren, and then their children. She wore the title of “Grandmama” with immense pride and the ones who named her that loved her beyond measure. They always knew they could count on her love and support in everything they did from school events to pageants and ballgames.
Doris was also a wiz in any kitchen, where everything she made was so delicious that everyone had a different favorite dish (which they were usually fortunate enough to receive on their birthdays). She also hosted her family for Sunday lunch every week… which definitely made it the best day of the week! She was extremely close with all of her sisters and always had a phenomenally fun time together. Doris was well-loved both by her family and her community at large, who fondly knew her for her soft-spoken demeanor and how wonderfully she treated everyone she met. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her so very deeply, but they will find comfort in knowing she has been reunited with her beloved Donald as they rejoice together in their heavenly reward.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Donald Thomas; parents, Grant and Merle Butts Carr; sister, Anne Carr; and brothers-in-law, Horace Paul Bozeman, Steve Owens, Jimmy Shaver, Ronald Thomas and Wayne Sanders. She is survived by her beloved children, Andy (Melissa) Thomas, Angie (Jace) Morgan and Stewart (Katie) Thomas; grandchildren, Josh Thomas, Grace Thomas, Sydney Morgan, Anna Morgan, Kelsey Morgan, Christopher Thomas and Presley Thomas; great-granddaughter, Adeline Thomas; siblings, John A. (Wanda) Carr, Carolyn Bozeman, Jeanette (John) Farmer, LaRue Shaver, Virginia Owens and Billie (John) Jones; sisters-in-law, Alice (Les) Spivey, Dorothy (Lex) Helms, Deborah Sanders and Dorothy Thomas and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers were Stevie Carr, Paul Bozeman, Charles Farmer, Jim Shaver, Curtiss Shaver, Danny Jones, and Tyler Jones.
The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Joquin Cemetery Fund.
