Raymond Franklin has announced his candidacy for the Crenshaw County Board of Education, District 5. Hailing from Pike County, Franklin has lived in Crenshaw County for over 22 years and will run as an independent for the seat in the November election.

As a graduate of nearby Goshen High School, Franklin said he understands the needs of a rural school district.

“Because I grew up and was educated in a rural county school district, I’ve learned first hand the importance of communication and teamwork,” Franklin said. “With your support, I will be a team player, supporting positive change for students, parents, educators, and the community.”

Franklin comes to the race with skills gained in the military and private-sector careers, something he said enhances his ability to lead schools in the right direction.

“My considerable background experience boasts both military and blue-collar [skills],” Franklin said. “I proudly served my country for many years, and I am a retired Sgt. First Class of the U.S. Army and Army National Guard. I also retired from Sikorsky Aircraft Maintenance in Troy as a helicopter electrician.”

After graduating from Goshen, Franklin immediately entered the workforce, and later, the military. He has attended various institutions of higher learning including Faulkner University, Troy University and a seminary college.

“I have been blessedly married for over 48 years to my biggest supporter, Sarah Stringer Franklin, who also attended the Crenshaw County school system,” Franklin said. “Additionally, I am a doting father and grandfather.”

The candidate said he is dedicated to serving the public, as he has pastoral leadership skills in counseling and public speaking.

“Having held many leadership roles in my lifetime, I will be utilizing my skills and flexibility which enables me to adapt to unique situations,” Franklin said. “It is my hope that the school board will be enhanced by my willingness to listen and consider other ideas.”

Franklin said he seeks a seat on the board to help improve schools in the systems.

“I am ready, willing, and able to work with other board members, the superintendent and the school faculty in my pursuit to improve student safety in the classroom and on school grounds, as well as transportation,” Franklin said. “It is my vision to be of the greatest assistance when it comes to advocating and creating learning opportunities for all public school students in Crenshaw County. I’m seeking your assistance to continue to serve my community in the capacity of an advocate for our children.Your vote will definitely be greatly appreciated.”
