The Best Thing About Heaven

In my ESV Bible, the term “heaven” is found 492 times in 463 verses of Scripture. That’s a stockpile of references to heaven! Interestingly, the ancients spoke of three heavens. The first heaven is the place where the birds fly. The second heaven is where the sun, moon and stars are suspended in place. The third heaven is the most special place of them all — it’s the dwelling place of God.

Paul referenced this celestial city in 2 Corinthians 12, describing when he was taken up into the “third heaven” and saw visions of “paradise” (2 Corinthians 12:2-3). If heaven is described as a place of paradise, then I can only imagine how wonderful and beautiful heaven must be!

Why do you want to go to heaven? Is it to be reunited with loved ones who have gone before you? Do you want to go to heaven to escape the problems and pains of this old world? Are you ready to have all tears wiped from your eyes? Do you want to go to heaven so you never have to grow old? Those ideas are really motivating! However, I think there’s something else to remember. According to Paul, heaven is where we finally get to “be with Christ” (Philippians 1:23). Truly, that’s the best thing about heaven!

If we are to “be with Christ” in heaven, then we must first live for Christ here on earth (see Philippians 1:21). When we faithfully walk with Jesus in this life, we can be certain we will dwell with him in the one to come. Take some time today to cherish this thought. It will brighten your day and motivate you to keep living for tomorrow. I can’t wait to be with my savior! How about you?
