Secretary of State Wes Allen issued a statement Tuesday reminding Alabama citizens that the deadline to register to vote in the April 16 Primary Election is Monday, April 1.

“As Secretary of State, I want to encourage all eligible Alabama citizens to register to vote and to exercise this constitutional right,” Allen said. “I am proud to know that the Primary Election was administered with election integrity and security as the top priority, and I look forward to ensuring that the April 16th election is fair, secure, and transparent.”

Electronic voter registration may be completed by visiting https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote.  A paper voter registration form may be delivered in person or by mail to your local Board of Registrars.

To be eligible to vote in Alabama, one must be a citizen of the United States, reside in Alabama, and be 18 years old on or before election day. One must not be barred from voting due to a disqualifying felony conviction or have been judged “mentally incompetent” by a court of law.

Under Alabama law, if a voter casts a ballot in the primary election and wants to vote in the primary runoff election, he or she must vote in the runoff election of the same party they chose in the primary election. If a voter did not participate in the primary election or voted only a constitutional amendment ballot, they may still vote in the primary runoff election for either party.

Sample ballots for counties that will hold a runoff election are available here: https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/2024-primary-runoff-election-sample-ballots

On election day, polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are required to present a valid form of photo identification when voting at their polling place or by absentee ballot.
