Members of several local fire departments responded to a call Tuesday night regarding a chicken house on fire on Davis Pond Road. Units are still working to extinguish the blaze.
Neighbors in the community noticed the glow and smoke and rushed to help, calling 911 as they tried to contain the flames while waiting for first responders.
Upon arriving, firefighters found one building engulfed in flames and the fire threatening to spread.
Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Simmons said it is unclear at this time what caused the fire.
“I haven’t talked the owners yet to try to figure out what happened,” Simmons said. “When we got here it was well over half engulfed in flames and it had started to try to spread up to a storage building on the other side. The good thing is there is no propane or any kind of accelerant inside.”
Robert Fulton, a representative of Koch Foods, said that no chickens were harmed as the building was unoccupied when the fire broke out.
“It was an empty house with no birds in it,” Fulton said. “It was getting ready to get birds in it Monday, so we’ve been working on it trying to get it ready and there were seven truck loads of fresh pine shavings inside there.”
At this time there is no further information as firefighters work to fully extinguish the fire.
