Stalled tractor-trailer blocks Highway 97

A stalled tractor-trailer has slowed traffic on Alabama Highway 97 Friday evening.

Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Investigator Chris Stewart reported around 9 p.m. that the stalled truck blocked the northbound lane of the highway at Beck Road. The southbound lane remained open, but was closed periodically to allow traffic to move south.

“Traffic is taking turns going around the truck, so the roadway is not completely blocked,” Stewart said. “The northbound lane is shut down and we are periodically shut down traffic to let one side go then opening it to let the other side go.”

The truck broke down Friday evening, Steward said. The Highland Home Fire Department responded to the scene and 911 dispatchers alerted the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to send a Trooper.

Highway 97 at Beck Road remains partially blocked for an undetermined amount of time, Stewart says. Stewart advised motorists to use caution in the area and find an alternate route if possible.
