The Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office arrested two registered sex offenders in Highland Home Friday.

Deputies arrested James Lee Keifert, 70, at his residence on Montgomery Highway in the Highland Home community during a sex offender compliance check.

Delbert Lee Danials, 72, also a registered sex offender, was arrested at the same residence.

According to Crenshaw County Sheriff’s investigator Chris Stewart, the department received a statement which prompted investigators to get a search warrant and search the residence. During the search, officers discovered illegally possessed firearms, Stewart said.

“We got a statement and applied for a search warrant,” Stewart said. “The judge granted it and we did a compliance check. We executed the search warrant and that’s when we located illegally possessed firearms and ammunition.”

The 2006 Alabama Code of law, Section 13A-11-72 prohibits certain persons from possessing a pistol. According to the statute, “No person who has been convicted in this state or elsewhere of committing or attempting to commit a crime of violence shall own a pistol or have one in his or her possession or under his or her control.”

Convicted sex offenders fall under this restriction, Stewart explained. Kiefert is a registered sex offender, convicted on Aug. 23, 1984 for first degree sexual abuse.

Daniels was arrested during the search for an active probation violation warrant from Autauga County. He is also a registered sex offender, convicted on Dec. 3, 2018 of possessing child pornography.

Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
