334 Cornhole facilitates family fun nights in Crenshaw

TJ and Sonya Mosely opened 334 Cornhole nearly three months ago with a desire to provide local residents with a place to gather for some good, clean fun. Since then, area residents have enjoyed Saturday night cornhole tournaments featuring food, games, and fellowship — a little something for all ages.

TJ has enjoyed playing cornhole for three years, playing frequently at Crenshaw Cornhole until the venue closed, when he began seeking a place to continue playing the popular lawn game with his extended community family.

“People have been really supportive of me,” TJ said. “It’s about family. There’s no other [recreational facility] in Highland Home that is family oriented. Everyone treats each other like family and that’s what I enjoy.”

The Mosely’s built a facility on their land, in their own front yard, and purchased six sets of game boards from Cornhole Chaos out of Arnaudville, Louisiana. After that, the initiative took off as community members joined the fun.

“I purchased the board and started advertising,” TJ said. “And when I did, it just blew up. I bring people over and introduce them to each other. You would be amazed how much love and support [participants] get out of the cornhole family.”

The Mosely’s host tournaments each Saturday night, beginning around 6 p.m. and TJ invites local food trucks to sell meals and snacks at the events.

Roughly 60 locals attend the tournaments. Players pay to participate in blind draws to win 100% of the pot and knockouts tournaments where winners earn 80% of fees collected.

“It’s a fellowship, really,” TJ said. “I do it for the fellowship and because there is nothing for younger or older generations to do without getting into trouble.

“It is a competition and it’s always a competitive thing. All my kids play and we travel to events like one in Panama City where there were 2,000 people. It’s a clean sport. There is just love in the air.”

Highland Home residents Laura and Kyle Tucker visit 334 Cornhole regularly and bring out their children to play and cheer for friends and family members as they compete.

“It’s fun watching other people enjoy themselves and play a game that’s family friendly,” Laura said. “Everyone is just having a good time. It’s really carefree and laid back. There’s good food and it’s fun watching people have fun.”

Laura said her daughters enjoy playing with the other children and she appreciates the opportunity tournaments afford for the whole family to have fun in a safe, friendly environment.

“TJ and his wife, Sonya, are so hospitable,” Laura said. They make it fun and they are always happy to see us. People bring their kids out, so there’s usually other kids running around in the yard playing. It’s an atmosphere that I feel okay with the kids being there.”

Kyle likes the strategy of the game and the chance he gets to compete and have fun with neighbors.

“I get to see people from the community and support a local business,” Kyle said. “It’s a game of strategy with a little bit of skill. We practice a couple of days a week and participate in the tournaments.”

TJ said he enjoys the game so much that on occasion, he and his son, Jacob, will play all night.

“He’ll say, ‘Daddy, one more game with me,” TJ said. “We’ve played from Saturday morning until Sunday morning. He just loves it.”
