Our view: SMART Alabama shows giving spirit in celebration of first responders

Leaders of SMART Alabama hosted a celebration of first responders Oct. 25 and delivered a much-needed donation of $10,000 to the Luverne Volunteer Fire Department and Luverne Rescue Squad.

While a steak dinner might not seem like much, it’s the gratitude shown within the gesture that shines through, and the time spent getting to know those who’ve taken an oath to help protect us that proves meaningful.

More often than not, our first responders work behind the scenes and are rarely recognized for the important role they serve in protecting us, thus the moments where people do show they care not only for the work done, but also the person behind the uniform accomplishing the task, are appreciated.

Our first responders work in some of the most demanding jobs our society has to offer; jobs that subject them to tragedies and traumas we may not even begin to understand.

The money provided will no doubt benefit those departments, whether the funds are used to purchase new equipment, provide training, or even take care of day-to-day operations.

Gary Sport, SMART Alabama’s general manager, said this event would be the first in a series of community events in the coming months as the company looks to become a better corporate citizen in Crenshaw County

We collectively look forward to future events hosted by SMART Alabama in order to put a positive spotlight on not just our first responders, but all in Luverne, Brantley, and throughout Crenshaw County who help keep our communities safe and moving forward.
