Mrs. Elaine Smith Wood, 73, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 14, 2022 while surrounded by her family. A graveside service for Mrs. Wood was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 16, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Tim Young officiating and Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Wood was a caring and accomplished nurse for over 50 years, and she was highly respected amongst her peers throughout her entire career. Her compassion extended into her free time as she used it to be a volunteer, as well as spending much of that time sharing her love for the Bible. She cherished her faith of 45 years as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Additionally, she was an avid traveler, and especially loved any time she was blessed to spend in her favorite location, Hawaii. Back at home, she was famous for her home-cooked meals, as well as enjoying the simple pleasures in what she affectionately referred to as her “farm life.” Above all, Mrs. Wood was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who considered her family to be her greatest blessing. She was the heart and foundation of her family and will be missed more than words can properly express. Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles Gaston Wood; parents, Aubrey H. & Eleanor Brooks Smith; and brothers, Kenneth Brooks Smith & Robert H. Smith. She is survived by her loving sons, Charles David (Debby) Wood, Jason Dale Wood, and Jerrod Andrew (Selena) Wood; grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Mann, Samuel Gaston Wood, and Emma Jule Wood; great-granddaughter, Raylen Grace Latham; and her devoted caregiver, Vicki Tate.
