Brantley Lady Dogs Battle Ready

The young Brantley High School Lady Dogs led by two seniors prepare to take on some tough competition in this year’s state championship run. On May 20, 2022, the 1-A Lady Dogs will take on Maplesville at 10:45 a.m. to see who will prevail to take on the winner of Holy Spirit and Sweet Water.

The Lady Dogs are not on unfamiliar territory. This team has seen the victory and defeat of a state championship. Senior Lady Dogs, Sheonte Barginere and Kayden Dunn, have graced State Championships for the last five years; two State Championships titles 2018 and 2021, two State Championship Runner Up titles, and one year that COVID took the game away completely. (thelostgamer.com) Through the trying times, the Brantley team of hot bats and cool heads has continued to be a success.

Coach Cindy Hawthorne is certainly no stranger to a state championship. Her coaching is top notch and with her no nonsense style of coaching and skill level, Brantley will come out on top. There are nothing but good vibes, happy thoughts and well wishes from everyone in Brantley for the young team and Coach Cindy as they prepare for yet another trip to Oxford.

Senior Sheonte Barginere is very excited and optimistic about the upcoming state run. It is her last year with the Lady Dogs, but shares some very insightful words for her team and future Lady Dogs, and well, for anyone with a winning spirit, “Always keep going and have fun. Be better than you were yesterday and be a great leader.” Whew, this kid is wise beyond her years. What message do you want to leave for the little girls that dream of being a champion? Barginere said, “Hey, shake off the bad stuff! Don’t worry about it. You will get it in time. Whatever happens, flush it and make the next play! You got this kid!”

Kayden Dunn, also a senior and team leader, is also excited to lead the young team. Dunn admits she is a little nervous but very pumped and ready to take on state. Kayden says this about her time with her fellow Lady Dogs, “It has been a pleasure to lead such a great group of young ladies. Our team is packed with “babies” (younger ladies) that look up to me. It is my job to be the best leader and champion to a great group of future leaders and champions. After all, that is the Brantley way!”

Brantley’s first game is Friday at 10:45 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at gofan.co, and games are available to watch live on the NFHS Network.
